ST. PETERSBURG — A woman believed to be in her late 50s was attacked by an alligator Monday morning and had to be hospitalized.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue responded to the 1800 block of 4th St. S at about 6 a.m. for a woman that was calling for help.

When fire crews arrived, they found a homeless woman that fell into the canal while she was resting on a seawall in the area.

She had severe injuries to her arms and was trauma alerted to Bayfront Health in stable condition.

Florida Fish and Wildlife is on the scene searching for the alligator.
