ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Fort Myers residents in some of the hardest hit areas are getting relief thanks to the St. Petersburg community.
What You Need To Know
- Ian devastated many parts of Fort Myers
- Thousands of pounds of food have been donated in response to a social media post
- Thanks to Rayner-Goolsby and her post, Fort Myers will receive the supplies
Florida Rep. Michele Rayner-Goolsby says that thousands of pounds of food, water, baby formula and other necessities have been donated in response to her social media post about collecting supplies.
“We have a little bit of everything,” said Rayner-Goolsby. “We have water, diapers, clothes and even Cottonaire.”
She said all essentials are desperately needed by some of the most underserved communities of Fort Myers like Dunbar and Harlem Heights. Some are not just trying to recover from structural damages and power outages, but the financial toll of missing work because of Hurricane Ian.
“I actually had a friend who was down in Harlem Heights yesterday and she says people were walking up with sand on their clothes, basically the same clothes they had when they were weathering the storm,” she added.
She initially secured a U-Haul for the trip, but quickly switched to a 10-foot truck after seeing just how generous the Tampa Bay community is in time of need.
“It says that no matter what with everything that is going on in the world, people are really good at heart,” she said.
Rayner-Goolsby said she is still taking donations and will possibly bring another truck of supplies to Fort Myers in the coming weeks.
