St. Petersburg police found a 60-year-old man dead Sunday morning after responding to a report of somebody bleeding, the agency said. Officers are investigating his death as a homicide.

Officers responded to Melrose Avenue, west of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S, at 7:15 a.m., according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The man they found dead there was not immediately identified, nor, police said on Sunday, had “the nature of his trauma.”

Police on Tuesday publicly identified the man as Vernon Gene Williams.

Melrose Avenue was closed Sunday morning between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S and 11th Street S for the investigation.

Police asked anyone with information to call St. Petersburg Police at 727-893-7780 or text “SPPD” plus their tip to TIP411.
