Gulfport will celebrate Independence Day with a kids fishing derby from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Michael J. Yakes Recreation Complex, 5730 Shore Blvd. S.

Bait will be provided, but all anglers must bring their own pole and tackle. Registration is free and starts at 7:30 a.m.

There’s also a patriotic-themed sand-sculpting contest from 10 a.m. to noon on Gulfport Beach. Free registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Winners will be announced at 12:15 p.m.

A parade along Beach Boulevard will begin at the Gulfport Public Library, 5501 28th Ave. S. at 6 p.m. The best viewing is in front of the Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd.

A welcome by the Gulfport mayor and city council members will follow the parade on the casino steps followed by patriotic music from the New Horizons Band at 7 p.m.

At 9 p.m., a fireworks display will launch from the Williams Pier. The best viewing location is Gulfport Beach.
