ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg Police Department took part in a statewide campaign to keep pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers safe on their busiest roads. The campaign started in November 2021 and will continue through May.

Operations conducted so far as of March 7 include education and enforcement.

- Pedestrian Education Contacts: 127
- Bicycle Education Contacts: 126
- Motorist Education Contacts: 269
- Total Citations Issued: 98
- Bicycle Lights Issued: 60
The St. Petersburg Police Departmet received a $47,214 contract to conduct High Visibility Enforcement operations. It is part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” campaign. The department is partnering with the Institute for Police Technology and Management and The University of North Florida for the initiative.
According to the department, FDOT in cooperation with IPTM awarded them the contract to provide an increased police presence in high-traffic areas to raise awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect pedestrians and bicyclists.
The department urges drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to practice the following safety measures:
Drivers:
- Obey speed limits
- Never drive impaired
- Always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists
Bicyclists:
- Obey traffic laws
- Ride in the direction of traffic
- Use lights when riding at night
Pedestrians:
- Cross the street in crosswalks or at intersections
- Obey pedestrian signals
- Make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night
