ST. PETERSBURG, Fla- — A 17-year-old was shot in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon, police said.
St. Pete police said the shooting happened near 13th Avenue South just west of 25th Street. Officers were originally called out around 3:30 p.m. for a domestic dispute between the teen and a female.
The caller reported the teen involved had a gun and he was actively involved in an argument with the female, attempting to take her phone. The teen is also the suspect of an armed robbery on a 10-year-old and 15-year-old that happened on Oct. 17.
When officers arrived, the teen fled on foot from Wildwood Park to 13th Avenue South, running eastbound. St. Petersburg K-9 Officer Leighton Williams saw the suspect run between two homes into an alleyway.
When Williams spotted the teen, he noticed he had a gun. Police said the officer then shot him.
The teen was transported to Bayfront Hospital in critical condition.
The teen is charged with:
- Armed robbery (St. Petersburg Police Department charge)
- Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
- Carrying a concealed Firearm
- Possession of a firearm by a person under 18 Years of age
- Battery (Dating Violence)
The department says the Pinellas County Use of Deadly Force Investigative Taskforce is investigating. The task force is intended to make sure investigations into officer-involved shootings are thorough and objective.
Officer Williams will be placed on routine administrative leave.
